- <p> DIED. FRANK McGUIRE, 80, college basketball coach; in Columbia,
- South Carolina. The dapper son of a New York City cop, Frank
- McGuire did more than bring a new game to the South when he
- became coach at the University of North Carolina in 1952--he brought a whole new culture, via his own street-smart style
- of basketball and the brace of inner-city phenoms fresh from
- Gotham schoolyards, whom he transplanted to the Tar Heels on
- his "underground railroad." In 1957 North Carolina beat Wilt
- Chamberlain and the Kansas Jayhawks and won an NCAA championship
- for McGuire. During a later stint with South Carolina's Gamecocks,
- he became the winningest coach in the state's history.
